It began on September 1887 in celebration of the wedding of the Crown Prince and Queen of Germany, Wilhelm and Augusta, toasts were raised to booty (beer), health (prosit!) and living in peace by all German-speaking people. In 1925, Munich’s mayor decreed that this festival should take place every year on October 12. Here's some information on why Oktoberfest actually starts in September nowadays.
The first Oktoberfest was a success. In 1938, Oktoberfest was renamed to Großdeutsches Volksfest (Greater German folk festival). During World War II no Oktoberfest was being celebrated. After the war, Munich celebrated only the "Autumn Fest".
