Hi Katja
Hi
First of all, thank you for having put up with me all day at your place.
Always a pleasure
So without further ado, let's get on with this week's interview. Before we get started, how did it go at Tower Bridge? I saw the place, stunning. Great atmosphere, great weather, great view, and, of course, great German sausages 🙂
Trading in Tower Bridge was a pleasure, everyone just loves the authentic German currywurst. We had fantastic people around us, fantastic view, the weather was great. We were busy and the week simply flew by.
People loved the currywurst (lots of good feedback!) and that really amde me happy. That's what trading is all about: making people happy.
Any comments about your homemade curry tomato sauce?
That's what people commented about. They go crazy for the Jumbo Melt in Tower bridge and the curry tomato sauce also.
This week we're talking about our favourite topic again.... German sausages! (laugh) - Bratwurst mobile catering. Obviously in Germany this is huge, but, having had the idea to bring the currywurst and Bratwurst to the UK, how do you see the 'Bratwurst landscape' within the British culture?
I'm introducing the Bratwurst really well I think. I sell it the same way we do it in Germany (Bratwurst with mustard). A lot of people choose it with ketchup which is also fine. Catering is not easy - it might come across as an easy thing but it is not. You have to get to know who you are serving, what they prefer, and you have to be fast. People are hungry when they reach the tent! This type of food is a specialty (it is important you choose your caterer well) and you have to be a specialist if you want to recreate the experience as you would get it in Germany. But yes, the sausage is really popular. Spanish and Italian people seem to go more for the Jumbo Melt (a frankfurter we sell filled with cheese) but it is also interesting to learn within each different London corner what people do prefer. It is never the same, it always changes.
What other type of mobile catering food do you think adds a special touch to the British street food industry?
Which other type of food? Hmm... street food pizza is really nice. It tastes great and we already have a lot of Chinese, burgers, indian and thinks like that.
What about danger? Do you feel safe out in a gazebo and also the trailer pod? Do you find it that you're in a vulnerable position
You mean as in robbery or weather conditions?
As in being robbed, yes. Or any type of aggression let's say from people who are drunk
I haven't been in any bad situations so far since I've been trading. I always make sure the money is safe, all doors are always locked in the car, etc. Just common sense things. Also we have insurance in terms of people's liability when we're serving food. So all good : )
A good question: would you prefer to eat your Bratwurst inside a restaurant, a take away place or as part of the gazebo tent street food experience?
I would prefer to eat my sausages outside, like on a Christmas market, food festival, standing by the high tables the way we do in Germany. The Bratwurst is a street sausages and I love selling it inside my gazebo.
Ok, Katja, thank you so much for a great interview once more. See you next week when I come back from Madrid - in the meantime, have a great time!
Thank you. Have a wonderful holiday 🙂
